Start your MLS search broad in scope and narrow it down as you go.  You may want to look in a specific zip code area or neighborhood that appeals to you.  The area you choose to search the Multiple Listing Service can have a wide range of homes within that area and careful scrutiny on your part won't let that once in a lifetime home sale slip through your finger tips.

Next is to drive through the local neighborhoods and general area(s) so when you are searching for the perfect home you will be able to identify the local amenities that will be listed in the Multiple listing Service such as parks, schools, shopping and etc.  Once you have become familiar with these areas the best part is yet to come.

Next make a list of all the things that are important and necessary to you for the home you desire.  Remember not all homes have everything you might be looking for, so prioritize.  As you go through the MLS search process you will find it is a simple fact of give and take.  For instance if you find a home you love but does not have the pool you want check with the local building departments and see if you can have one installed, or if you find an area and home you like but it needs updating that may be a project you will want to engage in.  Keep an open mind.

Finding the perfect home can be both exhilarating as well as frustrating.  Taking your time to find the right home and educating yourself about location, amenities and local services will ensure you've done everything possible to know all pertinent information.  The process can be staggering and if you know a realtor with communication manners (not a "Buy Now!" pest) you can usually end up feeling satisfied with one of the biggest purchases you will probably make in your lifetime.
